Stay Forever
Energy crystals always were a fascinating subject to any scientist, especially in this day and age. In fact, they were an integral part of her specially crafted Ciel System, although many would argue its central component was the upgraded Cyber Elves. But those Cyber Elves had to be fed something, and altered Energy Crystals were child's play to make to someone of Ciel's calibar. Her ancestor would be so proud of her...
... unless she saw the mess Ciel had made of herself.
Blood-shot blue eyes stared deeply into the reflections of themselves in the foggy, cracked bathroom mirror. The so-called savior of the world stood naked in front of her, staring at her ragged face, her limp wet blond hair and marveled at the way her ribs were starting to be defined well enough to be an anatomy model. Ciel was certainly a mess, she knew, and people assumed it was simply because she still wasn't over the death of the man she loved.
They were partially right. It's what started everything, anyway.
Ciel doodled on the mirror, ignoring the fact her shower was still running, and the steam was making her eyes tear up. Her skin looked burnt from the hot water she doused herself in, and in fact, she was certain she'll start peeling once she became dry. If she stayed in the steam, she might burn more, but at least she won't peel. Burns were easier to hide than flakes of skin coming off onto the floor.
Next to her was a canister of Energy Crystals, already drained of their primary energy pulses by the Cyber Elves she still studied. Used Energy Crystals were Cyber Elf secretions, in a way--once drained of their energy, the Cyber Elves disposed of the crystalline rocks by 'sweating' them out, which explained the constant glimmer and glitter. At first, no one bothered with the sand-grain sized glitter the Cyber Elves constantly emitted, but when Ciel noticed after feeding there was always an excess, she finally analyzed the sand and found out it was the remains of the crystals devoured.
What fascinated Ciel about the Elf Dust--it had no name, so she gave it an easy one to remember--was that despite it emitted no high pulses of energy like it's prior crystal form, there was a dormant chemical left over from the 'digestion' process. When given to Cyber Elves, it did nothing, and Reploids drew very little from it.
When a human ingested it, however, the effects were staggering.
Ciel was a curious girl, but she was also very mindful of others. She had no idea what side-effects could happen, and she had no right to make a fellow human a lab rat... so to sate her own raging, curious thoughts, Ciel took some of the Elf Dust and ate a spoonful. The moment it touched her tongue she wanted to scream, it burned so bad; yet there was an aftertaste that was so sweet she was tempted to eat more. It burned, gritty and uncomfortable, when it went down her throat, yet there was a soothing property after it passed, as if the cells of her insides were cleansed.
Once the chemical was digested and it circulated to her brain, Ciel knew instantly she was addicted.
The euphoric assault on her body and mind was nothing she ever experianced. She never knew the touch of a man--no, she couldn't betray her old love like that, not yet--but she knew her own touch, and what it could do. She knew the process of the brain, how it secreted pleasurable chemicals in response to orgasms and chocolates, and yet this little spoonful of Cyber Elf sweat defeated all of those sensations and left Ciel panting for more.
And as the main scientists for Cyber Elves, Ciel knew her addiction would never end, nor would she ever suffer withdrawal.
Even now she reached for the canister, popping it up and licking her finger, dipping it into the almost delicate dust within. She was becoming creative in ways of taking her secret, dark drug; it could be eaten, baked into things, snorted, burned and fumes inhaled, even smoked, but Ciel's last attempt at rolling the stuff into a decent blunt were horrible at best. But so long as the stuff got inside of her, it induced it's insane pleasure and mind-blanking sensations. For hours Ciel would end up sprawled on the floor of her bedroom after ingesting some, her eyes rolled back and shivering crazily, her body twitching as drool ran down the corners of her mouth, looking like a whore high off cocaine yet enjoying it so much more than anyone would realize.
Her mind would cloud, her body would tingle and sing, and nothing mattered. She forgot, in those blissful hours, who she was, what happened, what was going on. She would float endlessly in this rapture, so black and blank, and she wanted to wrap it around her like a security blanket.
A thought came to her just before she brought her finger to her mouth, and Ciel stared at her guilty reflection. Like any addiction, like any drug, there were terrible consequences. Mood swings, hallucinations, delusions, emotions she did not feel now becoming her own... her social life was failing, her work partners doubting her now, her life was falling apart.
Yet even as she stared at herself, big tears of guilt and shame falling down her cheeks, Ciel's tainted hand reached for herself between her legs.
Some guilty pleasures, one simply could not stop.

"Sis, we're worried about you..."
"I'm aware of that," Ciel snapped, throwing her work folder onto the table. Alouette, now in a new, older body, winced at the sudden action. "I'm also aware of telling you all that I'm fine!"
Alouette's lower lip trembled, but Ciel had long gained immunity to the effect. Maybe it was the dust that helped with giving her a spine. "B-but Sis... you're so skinny now, always so ragged looking... and your eyes! Do you get any sleep?"
"Plenty." Ciel grounded out. "And you've seen me eat."
"So why are you losing weight so rapidly?"
Ciel knew why, but she didn't tell Alouette. The dust sped up metabolism to the extreme, burning off natural food energy and, instead of feeding that natural energy to the body, it fed the dust's chemicals. In essence, the dust stole any benefit food could give... including maintaining body weight.
"I guess it's just stress," Ciel lied between her teeth. "The Ciel System is hiccuping and we don't know why, and Cyber Elves are becoming harder to produce and keep alive after infantcy. Everyone keeps pointing at me, but I'm just one person."
Alouette hung her head. She also looked up to Ciel to fix this new energy crisis arising, and was guilty of adding to that stress. "You need to relax," the Reploid girl said softly. "You... you look ready to die."
"Wouldn't that be grand?" Ciel remarked sarcastically. "I could name a few men who died and everyone just loves them!"
"Ciel..."
"Yes yes yes, 'Zero didn't just plan to die' or 'He knew it was the only option' and 'his sacrifice brought peace to the world,' I've heard it all, Alouette. Zero, X, the Guardians, so many damn Reploids I wanted to save just up and perished. Maybe if they stuck around I'd have a break or two!"
Alouette blinked, looking up at Ciel. The scientist never, ever spoke of Zero or the others with any sort of negative emotion, and now, it was as if Ciel... hated them.
The Reploid took a step forward. "Sis, you should take a break."
Ciel screamed in frustration suddenly, making Alouette jump back. "Just get out! I know what I'm doing--God, can't you people not treat me like I'm some delicate glass figurine that'll break at a moment's notice? I'm over Zero being dead--the asshole has been dead for three years now! I get it! I got other shit to worry over, and I can handle it! I fought a war since I was fourteen, Alouette, and grew up into it! I can handle a little stress!"
Alouette ran out of the room, and Ciel got up after her to lock the door securely. Alouette was not one for confrontation, and now that Ciel obviously brought one up, the girl would remain away at least for the rest of the day. If Ciel was lucky, she'd keep everyone else away too.
Ciel returned to her desk, opening the drawer and fishing out her beloved canister. She could take a little bit, calm her nerves a bit... it couldn't hurt.
To make sure she limited the amount, Ciel grabbed her pen cap and dragged it through the sand in the canister. She tapped it almost expertly, emptying the cap til her desired amount and tilted her head back, dumping the stuff straight down her throat. It burned, and she winced, but waited patiently for her pleasure.
When it hit, and her mind hazed, Ciel sighed blissfully and dropped the pen cap, carressing her canister like a lover. It was something Zero had given her during one of the quieter missions, saying she could use it for something. It was a useful tool... yet even as she brushed her fingertips along its shiny surface, nothing of Zero really came up. Not his face, not his voice...
In fact, at that moment, Ciel felt a little confusion. Who was Zero again?
It doesn't matter who he is, the chemical sang, and Ciel smiled, resuming her carress of the can. All that matters is this.
Ciel giggled for no reason. Yes, all that mattered was this now.

Ciel decided on her best days, she hated Zero.
Maybe it would not have been so bad if she knew how he felt. Ciel agonized over him every day for months, years, him always on her mind. Yet despite his soothing words once in a while, Zero hardly gave her the time of day. Did he ever care about her beyon co-worker and friend? Ciel had no idea--if she didn't know it from X, she'd deny he ever cared about his old friend. But obviously he did--he bloody died for X's ideals.
"I hate men." Ciel randomly announced.
Cerveau raised an eyebrow. "Even me?"
"I just might."
"Why this all of a sudden?" he shone the penlight into Ciel's eyes.
Despite his worried look at her overall dismal physical check, Ciel never felt better. She had mixed the dust with enhanced chocolate, and it was as if she had pure energy in her. It was quite the rush.
"You ask them 'stay with me forever' and the bastard says 'sure.' I think 'sure' is man-speak for 'I'll never come back again.'" Ciel made a face as Cerveau's frown. "What?"
"'Sure' doesn't sound like a word Zero would use." Cerveau said, checking something off on his list.
Ciel bristled. "No shit, doc, it was a general statement."
Cerveau continued to look through the papers. "Are you saying you had other boyfriends?"
"No."
"Then who else could you possibly be referring to?"
"Who cares." Ciel grumbled. Her hyperness was wearing fast thanks to Cerveau's asshatery.
Finally her old friend gave her the most serious look she'd ever seen him take on, or was even capable of. It made her, for a moment, be the real Ciel and she looked at him worriedly.
"Be honest with me, Ciel." Cerveau took her hand in one of his, staring straight into her eyes. "What drug are you taking?"
No!
"Nothing."
Cerveau's grip tightened when Ciel tried to move her hand. "Don't lie to me, Ciel. You show obvious signs to being addicted to some substance, mainly a chemical one. What drug is it, Ciel? Let me help you... you keep going like this, you'll lose yourself. Then your sanity. Then your life."
"I-I'm fine," Ciel tried to laugh, but tears began to fill her eyes. No, not the mood swings, not now! "I-it's just stress."
Cerveau frowned deeply. "Ciel..."
"Don't 'Ciel' me! I'm fine!" the human ripped her hand from his and ran out of the examination room, Cerveau shouting for her.
You can't take it away from me! Ciel's mind, addled and losing mass even now, screamed. My euphoria! My happiness! It can't go off and die, and I can have it when I want it!
Herself? Her sanity? It was all worth it. All worth it for those blissful, wonderful hours of being nothing.

Ciel was under house arrest.
Neige tried to talk to her, a human to human talk. At first, Ciel thought it would be good. Neige had loved Craft... loved him, been loved, and lost him. Yet Neige was anything but helpful, only reminding Ciel all she had lost, all she had given up and, ultimately, reminded her it was her fault Zero had to die.
The third day Neige tried to visit, Ciel screamed her out of the house. She was forbidden by friends, so called friends, to leave for work. To do anything on her own, and so Ciel locked herself in her house and ignored phone calls and emails, ignored anyone that came around.
They never found her Elf Dust.
"The bitch tried again," Ciel said loudly as she shoved a messy handful of dust into her mouth. "Can you believe it?"
Her reflection nodded at her, smirking.
"What's so damn funny?" dust spewed from her lips. "Oh, you bitch, that's wasteful!"
The mirror Ciel laughed silently, then rubbed its eyes.
Ciel snorted out, then snorted a little palmful of dust. "You can shove it, too."
The reflection reached for her canister, and Ciel shrieked, grabbing it before the offensive twin could. "Stay away! It's mine, mine!"
Loss of sanity, eh? Ciel suddenly thought, ceasing her screams and staring at her reflection. It's mouth was moving. No, you gotta prove to them you're fine, or you'll rot here.
Ciel glared. "You have an idea?"
Reploid souls are advanced Cyber Elves, aren't they? More so than what you've come up with, but the human mind is amazing in that it can learn more. You have enough brain mass left, I think, to come up with something.
"Something." Ciel repeatedly dumbly.
The reflection grinned. If you could revive Zero... bring his soul back...
"Revive Zero..." Ciel murmured. "Maybe X and some others..."
They'd call you a genius. They'd give you peace.
"Yes." Ciel nodded to her reflection, and smirked. "You're so smart, Ciel."
She dropped the canister, not caring as the dust spilled all over the floor. By the time she learned to revive dead Reploids, bring them back, she could get more. She didn't even care that the canister cracked.
Once Zero was back, he'd get her a new one anyway.
Ciel wasn't sure where to start, but energy was always a priority. Reploid souls were energy, were data, and those could be manipulated. Cyberspace... and she needed a holder for whever soul she would extract. Something not easily destroyed like a full body, but could possibly 'borrow' a form when infused with a human...
Kind of like Elf Dust. Make it something powerful on its own... but when taken by a human...
Ciel giggled for no reason and set herself to work. She wasn't mad. She wasn't anyone else but herself. Cerveau had no idea.
She looked at her reflection and it was smiling insanely at her. Ciel scoffed, throwing a canvas over the shiny surface.
"You crazy bitch," Ciel muttered.
"Artifical energy running through my veins...
Chemical love I feel for faces without names.
My eurphoia, oh yes you're worth the price...
Because when my mind gets clouded I forget about our fights.
'Stay forever' is 'never again...'"
