The Second Choice
"How...?"
A chilling laugh that made Zero's skin crawl, a pair of insane red eyes tiny in the expression of madness. "How?" Omega chuckled, his hand on Ciel's scalp tightening, making her let out a soft cry. "How, he asks! You thought that massive body was me? It never occured to you something was in it? You're an idiot, but I suppose that's what happens when one is a mere copy!"
A... a copy...? Zero's mind tried to process the information, but each time it passed through, an error message popped up. A copy?
Omega howled in laughter, tossing his head back and jerking Ciel to the side by her hair; her pathetic cry of pain made Zero snarl and he swung his saber threateningly.
Cryptic words can be deciphered later, he had to save Ciel now.
"Hoo, did that upset you?" Omega snickered. His other hand tangled in some loose strands at Ciel's temple, and his grin grew. "How about this?" he jerked the hair out, making the poor girl screech as blood poured down her face.
Ciel!! "Let her go. If its me you want, I will comply, merely let her go." Zero's eyes narrowed, but despite his words he did not lower his weapon.
Omega smiled, and it chilled Zero to the wire at the near serenity of it. "I'm sure you would. But it's not you, persay, that I'm after."
"What the hell do you want, then?"
"I give you a choice," Omega crooned, dropping the bloody hair to grab a pistol from his belt. He pressed it into the bleeding area of Ciel's head, digging it in and making her sob. "You can have your little girlfriend back, or..." he whistled.
A cylindar suddenly appeared next to Omega, as if teleported in. When it finished materializing, Zero recognized it as a Cyber Elf isolation chamber, meant to hold unstable and dangerous Elves. A lone Cyber Elf floated forlornly in the middle of it, jerking to life when Omega kicked the container.
"Materialize," Omega hissed.
The Cyber Elf seemed to refuse him until Omega's foot tapped something at the base, and the chamber filled with light. Moments later, Zero was left gaping at the beaten, shimmering appearance of X, cramped in the chamber. How did...
"So here's your choice," Omega smiled again. "Your little human girlfriend, who is also the shining icon of hope for all humans with a brain, I might add... or your last link to your past, your old best friend. I'm taking one with me, you get to pick who it isn't."
X was shouting something, but the chamber blocked all sound. Zero could only read one phrase he was saying, Save Ciel. I'm going to die anyway. Save Ciel.
Ciel was in too much pain, too scared, to say anything other than whimperings of Zero's name. Zero glared at Omega, who was obviously enjoying this. He had no clear shot at the freak that wore his face, not unless he released Ciel...
Zero gritted his teeth. The choice was obvious, and X was correct, Zero knew it: without his body, X would eventually cease to be. Ciel was priority, but X was Zero's best friend, the link to his past, the person he could always depend on regardless, the soothing presence and...
But Ciel was young, did not deserve to be tossed aside, and Zero did care for her. She...
Zero didn't have to say it, but he did anyway. He looked at X and whispered, "I'm sorry."
X smiled, nodded, understood. He knew, and Zero would forever be grateful.
"Give me Ciel." Zero commanded. "Take X."
Omega's smile didn't change. "You're too soft," he taunted. "Do humans mean so much to you? Are they that controlling of a factor? This is why I was created, and why you were thrown into that scrapped together shell... because you just don't get it."
Omega pulled the trigger, and Zero screamed.
He let Ciel go, her body crumpling to the ground. Blood began to pool around her head, her eyes wide and shocked, her expression that still of fear and pain, and Zero was rooted to the spot staring at her body with his own shocked eyes.
He... he... Ciel...
"Ciel..."
Omega turned and kicked the cylinder across the room and it shattered upon impact. X angrily flew out of it at him, and Omega laughed as his power did nothing when he went through the red-eyed blond.
He turned back to Zero, who was still frozen, still staring at Ciel's body. "I don't want you. I want your despair, your anger. I want you to feel the same liberty I do! Let the insanity empower you, let power consume you, and once it has..." Omega's smile turned into a feral grin, eyes dilating. "I'll have you then, you in all your glorious, pathetic rage!"
Zero didn't hear a word, didn't realize Omega teleported away. He didn't even feel X's attempt to soothe him, all he saw was young, pretty Ciel on the ground, dead and her hair soaking up her own blood.
Ciel!
Zero fell to his knees, but he couldn't bring himself closer to her body. A part of him told him to get a grip, this wasn't the first time he'd seen a dead human or the death of a cherished one, and yet...
She was fifteen... fifteen and human and hopeful and a leader and...
Contrary to Omega's wishes, Zero felt no anger or insanity or power. He just felt cold, empty, and so much like a failure, all over again.
